Tattoo aftercare, day by day

A new tattoo is a healing wound. Most heal on the surface in two to four weeks and fully in about two to three months. Good aftercare keeps it clean, comfortable and sharp. Always follow your artist's instructions first.

When to see a doctor

Some redness and swelling is normal in the first days. Redness that spreads or grows after day 3, increasing pain, heat, pus, red streaks or a fever can mean infection: see a doctor promptly.
